The Power of a Writing Ritual

One of the biggest mistakes authors make is thinking they’re writing their book alone… and that’s exactly when the power of a writing ritual is needed most.

Because, nothing could be further from the truth!

You aren’t writing your book all alone.

In fact, in a conversation with a client recently, I taught her about the power of a writing ritual.

As a result of putting what she learned into action, she now almost can’t stop writing!   Whereas before she felt stuck every time she sat down to write.

So, I want to share with you what I taught her…

Maybe you can relate to the situation she was in.

She had set up a beautiful space to write her book.  She blocked out time on her calendar to be in that space to work on her book.   And she showed up in front of her computer- consistently – for her writing appointments.

And, she sat there.

She looked at the screen hoping to get words onto the page.  But those words escaped her.

The crazy thing is she knows her topic inside and out.

She also knows she’s been “directed” by a power higher than herself to write this book.

Heck, she and I even put together her outline at one of my writing retreats.

She had all the pieces in place.  Except the words.

So, when we got on the phone for her coaching call and she shared what was going on… my intuition kicked in big-time.

While this isn’t a question I ask often, there it was, “What kind of writing ritual do you do before placing your fingers on the keyboard?”

Silence on the other end of the phone.

After a long pause, she shared with me that “she wasn’t doing anything.”

And after another long pause we both knew that something big had just happened by the way she said, “she wasn’t doing anything.”

I could feel the reality settling in.  That she, a woman of faith, had been stuck in a thought pattern than had her believing “she” alone was the one writing the book.

Now, for some people this might not seem like a big deal.

However, I am a firm believer that the same Source that planted the seed of your book in YOUR heart is the same Source that ALREADY knows every single word for every single page.

Your job as an author is to connect with that Source and allow for the words to flow naturally and easily through you and onto the page.   Realizing that you are not writing your book alone.

Writing and transformational book is a partnership between you and something greater than you.

Some people call it Energy Source, Universe, God, Goddess, All That Is, etc.

That said, it doesn’t matter what you call it. What matters is that you access It before you begin to write.

This is so important and too often overlooked, that one of the lessons in my Get Your Book Done® program teaches you how to create a writing ritual that works for you.  One that helps you tap into that Source and open the floodgates of words to pour onto the page.

Just like a runner doesn’t just hop up from their desk at work and hit the road for a run in their dress clothes and fancy shoes.   Nope.

They go through a ritual to prepare for their run.   They put on appropriate running attire.  Stretch.  Grab their headset and select their running music.   Determine how far they’ll run.  Plan their route.

You get the picture… the ritual prepares them to run.

And as a writer, you need a ritual to prepare you to write.

One that REMINDS you that you aren’t writing your book alone.   And  helps you feel connected to the very Source that gave you the book idea in the first place.

For some of my clients, their ritual involves lighting a candle or saying a prayer.   Others prefer to do a breathing meditation to help them become present.   Others invoke their higher self, angels, guides, etc.   Some put sacred objects on their writing desk and connect with those before writing.

The possibilities are endless.  But I assure you that creating your own writing ritual is worth it!

To give you an idea of what can happen as a result of doing this, here’s an email I received from my client after I taught her this…

“I wanted to let you know that I have been WRITING!  I have put in place a prayer, a ritual and a process.  I almost can’t stop writing!   Thank you so much!   I look forward to seeing  you next month!

My response…

“Woo hoo!  I am so excited to for you and thrilled to hear this awesome news!!  So grateful we got to talk last week!”

What do you think?

Is it time for you to create a writing ritual?  Can  you relate to what my client experienced?  Do you already have a ritual in place?

Comment below and let me know.  I’d love to hear from you…

Love,

Christine
