First Steps for Writing Your Book

The very first step on your writing journey is deciding what book you have inside of you. What do you have to say that will impact the most people? What message will reach the soul of your readers and bring about their transformation in the process of YOUR transformation?

First, you need to ask yourself, “What is the transformation you want for you?” What is your own personal transformation that you believe will impact others the most? Because if you want your readers to have a transformation in the reading of your book and you are not willing to have one for yourself as you go through the writing of the book, you will not be able to impact the depth of transformation that you want for your reader. I don’t believe you can crank out a book overnight and have it be all it can be. There is a journey you go through as an author. But, finding out YOUR transformation is step one.

Then, you need to think about what you want for your reader. There’s something that they are coming to you for that you want to deliver. It might be deep down in your subconscious…a yearning in your heart that you’ve known has been there for years. You might have a goal in mind, that everyone that reads your book will have this specific transformation.

Who cares if you’re writing about relationships and your readers have read 50 or 100 books on that topic already? Remember, they have never read YOURS! Each and every one of us has different experiences, different lessons. Maybe yours will be the one that they read and they finally GET it. It hits home to them on a level that all of those other books never did.

A third level to think about in the process of getting your book written is “What is the transformation that you want for the world through this book?” If every single person on the planet read your book and applied and integrated what you taught, what would the world look like? Would people not suffer through the heartbreak of choosing the wrong relationship? Would everyone be living out their purpose through their work, so we don’t have the majority of the population going to a job that they would rather not go to?

Remember, the book doesn’t have to be the “perfect” book. It just has to be the right book at the right time for the right people. So, if you feel called right now to write a book, even if you’re not sure it’s the right one, write it. If it’s not the one that you’re going to hang your hat on for 10 years and speak about everywhere, it is at least the next step to get you to where you are meant to be.

So, if you feel the pressing on your heart, don’t delay. It’s always right for what you’re experience right now. Once you’ve written it, you will feel like you can teach the content of that book at a whole different level than you did before you started, because it gets in your cells. It’s who you are. You are the living breathing, walking embodiment of the message in your book. I honestly don’t know anything that quite transforms people like writing a book.

My next few ezine articles will begin a series of writing tips. The first step, however, is knowing exactly what transformations you want to happen from your book.
